It may come as a shock to some, but here in Baltimore, the school lunch program is in dire need of some funding. Here’s what happened in the Baltimore city school district in the last two days;
Yesterday, the inner city students were sent home from school with notes that said “due to the touogh economic times, the school lunch program will no longer be able to afford to give out the free lunches. Starting tomorrow, all students will now have to pay $2.25 per lunch.”
Today, at lunch time, hundreds of kids at the school my wife teaches at showed up without the required $2.25 needed to eat lunch. See, here in Baltimore, inner city kids are suffering. Maybe it is the economy, maybe not. Many are from poor, single parent homes with one income. Some are from families with no income. The school lunch program is where most of these kids get the best and sometimes only meal of the day, and without it, many will go hungry during and after school.
My wife said many of the students cried when they were told they couldn’t eat lunch if they had no money. After the paying students were allowed to eat, all the other kids were made to wait and were given cold cereal and milk. That’s it. Today, the temperature here in Baltimore was in the low 20’s and all the school could do was dish out cold cereal that hardly qualified as a meal. How are kids supposed to concentrate on learning in this type of environment?
I believe this should qualify for an immediate bailout. Let’s send the money where it is really needed, not to some fat cats that make $500,000.
